"I express my sympathy and respect to the firefighters who were attacked during their rescue operations in Varese in the past few hours," Candiani stated. "Parliament has approved specific provisions to increase criminal penalties for those who obstruct or attack rescue workers. I hope the relevant authorities will criminally punish this incident, ensuring this shameful act does not go unpunished."

Staff shortage and complex territory

In addition to condemning the incident, the Lombardy MP points to a problem he calls "structural": the lack of personnel among the firefighters. "I have already contacted the provincial fire department commander," he explains, "to obtain precise data regarding the staffing shortage that has existed for too long. I also urged the ministry directly, and it had remained unresolved for too long."
